OpenAI is testing ChatGPT group chats in select regions
OpenAI is piloting a group chat experience for ChatGPT that allows multiple users to collaborate within a shared conversation alongside the AI assistant. This new feature enables friends, family, or coworkers to plan, make decisions, or work through ideas together in real time. Group chats are strictly separated from private conversations, and personal ChatGPT memory is never shared with other participants, addressing privacy considerations.
While group chats work like standard ChatGPT interactions, they allow several users to join, with ChatGPT's responses powered by the GPT-5.1 Auto system. This system selects the most suitable model for each reply depending on the specific user's subscription tier, such as Free, Go, Plus, or Pro. Core ChatGPT functionalities, including search, image and file uploads, image generation, and dictation, are fully available within group chats. Rate limits apply only when ChatGPT responds, and only count toward the quota of the user who requested the AI reply.
Following these feature integrations, ChatGPT can participate in the group conversation when addressed or based on context, react with emojis, and use profile photos to generate personalized images on request. The pilot is accessible on web and mobile for logged-in users in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan across all ChatGPT subscription plans.
