Microsoft launches VS Code private marketplace for secure extension management among teams
Microsoft has introduced the private marketplace for Visual Studio Code, a new enterprise-focused hub that gives organizations comprehensive control over how extensions are sourced, reviewed, and distributed within development teams. Through this platform, administrators can select exactly which extensions — both internal tools and trusted public plugins — are available to users, while keeping sensitive intellectual property protected by privately hosting proprietary add-ons.
Building on these central controls, the private marketplace enables companies to rehost vetted public extensions after in-house security checks, supporting use even in secure or air-gapped environments. Organizations can centrally manage extension rollout, ensuring every user receives a consistent, up-to-date catalog from their first day, speeding up onboarding and reducing manual maintenance.
Developers continue to enjoy seamless integration with Visual Studio Code, as extensions can be found, installed, and updated directly in the editor without manual downloads or risky installations. To access the Private Marketplace, users must sign in with a GitHub Enterprise, Copilot Business, or Copilot Enterprise account, aligning the service with enterprise security and authentication standards.
