Joomla 6 released with automatic core updates, new child template, and improved versioning
Joomla 6.0 “Kuimarisha” (and Joomla 5.4 “Kutegemea”) have been released as the latest versions of this open source content management system (CMS). Foremost among its new features, Joomla now supports automatic core updates, letting site administrators keep their installations current without manual intervention. This update adds an extra layer of security and streamlines routine maintenance tasks.
Building on user experience improvements, Joomla 6 introduces a Cassiopeia child template with additional color and font customization. Administrators can define more color schemes and font sizes without editing CSS files. In addition, both the Cassiopeia frontend and Atum backend templates now use CSS transitions, ensuring smoother navigation between pages.
Joomla 6 also refines content management capabilities. The versioning system now includes custom fields data, which was previously untracked, improving content history management and editing flexibility. Two new custom field types have been added: “notes” enables inline instructions or contextual tips, while “numbers” allows for dedicated number input with optional currency formatting.
The update further delivers backward compatibility improvements, new date and datetime fields, an updated TinyMCE text editor (version 8.0.1), and improved performance from cached language files, among others.
