Tails 6.11 fixes critical security vulnerabilities and updates Tor Browser & Thunderbird
Tails has launched version 6.11 of its portable operating system, designed to enhance protection against surveillance and censorship. This update addresses several security vulnerabilities identified by Radically Open Security, which were responsibly disclosed to the Tails team. In previous versions, attackers could potentially exploit the Tails Upgrader to install malicious software permanently, but Tails 6.11 now prevents such threats.
Additionally, Tails 6.11 offers improved defenses against monitoring online activity and altering Persistent Storage settings, reducing the risk of deanonymization or browsing activity tracking. The update also introduces detection of partitioning errors, which could occur due to corrupted partitions on Tails USB sticks. Users are advised to reinstall or use a new USB stick if errors are detected, especially when Persistent Storage is not present.
The release includes updates to the Tor Browser 14.0.4 and Thunderbird 128.5 ESR. Tails 6.11 also removes support for hardware wallets in Electrum due to incompatibility issues with Debian 12, and disables the GNOME Text Editor from reopening the last file.
