Matrix.org to retire guest accounts and introduce MAS authentication

The Matrix.org homeserver is set for significant changes in its authentication process in the first quarter of 2025, with guest account access ceasing on January 16th as part of the transition to Matrix 2.0. The Matrix Authentication Service (MAS) enables more flexible authentication journeys without requiring client developers to support every authentication method. They can test compatibility with MAS on beta.matrix.org. Homeserver administrators from the public federation are unaffected, as MAS only impacts client-server APIs, not federation APIs. Guest accounts, known to exert considerable load on the homeserver, will be disabled to optimize resources and facilitate the new authentication framework rollout.
