WordPress blocks WP Engine from accessing its free resources amidst heated legal dispute

WordPress escalated its conflict with hosting provider WP Engine by blocking the latter's servers from accessing WordPress.org resources, including vital software updates. This move follows a scathing attack by Automattic CEO and WordPress co-creator Matt Mullenweg, who labeled WP Engine a “cancer to WordPress” for allegedly profiteering without contributing back to the open-source project and disabling key features.

In response, WP Engine issued a “cease and desist” letter to Automattic, accusing the company of serious misconduct. Automattic subsequently announced that WP Engine would no longer have free access to WordPress.org resources, pending ongoing legal claims and litigation. Mullenweg emphasized in a WordPress.org post that WP Engine would now need to manage its own infrastructure and services independently, and that their servers can no longer access WordPress.org's servers for free.

I was wondering what was going to happen. WP Engine is not the only example of profiting from open source platforms and barely giving anything back.

There are so many multi-million, billion, trillion dollar companies that are like that. If they just gave back to the open source project(s) they use to build their infrastructure these projects would be such a better position.
