LXQt 2.1 to introduce experimental Wayland support and enhanced features in November
The lightweight Qt desktop environment, LXQt, has unveiled details of its upcoming 2.1 release, scheduled for mid-November. The highlight of this release is the experimental support for Wayland sessions, introduced via a new package named lxqt-wayland-session. Adhering to LXQt’s modular philosophy, users who prefer X11 will not experience any changes unless they opt to install this package.
Wayland sessions will allow users to select a compositor, much like choosing a window manager under X11. Supported compositors include Hyprland, Labwc, kwin, Niri, Sway, River, and Wayfire, each with a basic configuration file provided. Note that some applications may not function under Wayland, and their auto-starting can be restricted to X11.
In addition to Wayland support, LXQt 2.1 will feature styling improvements, various enhancements, and bug fixes. The release is available for testing by installing from sources or through distro-specific packages.
