Google enhances Gmail security with blue verification checkmarks coming to iOS and Android

Google has announced two updates for Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) aimed at enhancing Gmail inbox security. Gmail now supports Common Mark Certificates (CMC), a new type of BIMI certificate issued by Certificate Authorities (CA). CMCs enable a broader range of senders, including those without a registered trademark, to utilize BIMI. With a CMC, the sender's brand avatar is displayed without the verified checkmark shown for Verified Mark Certificates (VMC).

Additionally, BIMI verified checkmarks will now be visible on Gmail's Android and iOS apps. Previously, these checkmarks were only displayed on Gmail's web version for senders with a VMC. Over the coming weeks, users will see these verified icons in the mobile applications.

Since its introduction in 2021, BIMI has been crucial in building trust between email senders and recipients. To qualify, senders must adopt best practices and have their domains and brand logos verified by a third party, helping recipients easily identify legitimate emails.
