postmarketOS 24.06 brings GNOME Shell 46, KDE Plasma 6, and expanded device support

postmarketOS, a Linux distribution tailored for mobile devices, has unveiled its latest version 24.06, which is built on Alpine Linux 3.20. This release includes GNOME Shell on Mobile 46, featuring a double-tap keyboard trigger on the bottom bar and a new scheduling manager that enhances UI fluidity.

KDE Plasma Mobile 6.0.5, replacing version 5.27.10, brings significant improvements nearly a decade after Plasma 5's initial release. The home screen has been revamped, allowing users to customize pages with apps, folders, and widgets, alongside an app drawer and search function. A new welcome screen aids in setting up Wi-Fi, timezones, and more during the first launch.

Phosh 0.39 and Sxmo 1.16.3 have also been updated, replacing versions 0.33 and 1.15.1 respectively. Key updates include an improved user interface, new keyboard mappings for Chromebooks, GPU acceleration for Samsung Chromebooks, and pre-installed non-free firmware. Additionally, numerous kernel upgrades, enhancements, and bug fixes have been implemented across all devices.

The supported device count has expanded from 45 to 50 in the main and community categories, and with the inclusion of testing devices, postmarketOS now supports over 250 devices.
