iOS 17.5 brings web-based app download in EU, tracking detection, and News+ offline mode
Apple has unveiled iOS 17.5, the latest version of its operating system, featuring a mix of significant changes and minor updates. A notable change in this version is the support for web-based app distribution in the European Union. This development allows developers to offer their apps for download outside the confines of the App Store.
In addition to this, Apple News+ has launched Quartiles, a new spelling game, and an offline mode. The latter automatically delivers recent and personalized news content to subscribers when they lack Wi-Fi or cellular network access.
In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry specification named Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers. This specification is designed for Bluetooth tracking devices and can alert users on both iOS and Android if such a device is covertly used to track them.
Another feature of iOS 17.5 is a repair state option. This option enables iPhones to be sent in for service without deactivating the Find My and Activation Lock features. Lastly, iOS 17.5 introduces a new Podcasts widget, the latest Pride wallpaper, and includes various stability improvements.
