Kdenlive introduces a new background removal tool in alpha, powered by SAM 2's technology
Kdenlive, the popular open source video editing software, has introduced a preview of a much-anticipated feature: a modern background removal tool. This new capability leverages Meta SAM 2's object segmentation technology, utilizing object masks to facilitate the replacement or elimination of unwanted backdrops in videos. Users can now easily mask specific objects, allowing for targeted effects or color corrections.
The background removal tool is available in the test alpha version of Kdenlive. Users interested in testing this feature can download the alpha version, but should be aware that the binaries are not signed. This may require manual installation permissions on Windows systems.
As this is an alpha release, further enhancements and refinements are anticipated for the upcoming 25.04 version of Kdenlive. The development team is expected to continue improving this non-linear video editor, with more features and polish likely to be unveiled in 2025.
