Apple finally brings iCloud Passwords extension to Firefox, but only for macOS users

Apple has released the iCloud Passwords extension for Firefox, over a year after its availability on Chrome and Edge. This release allows Firefox users to access passwords and logins stored in the Passwords app or iCloud Keychain. Previously developed by another party, Apple has now taken over the Firefox extension, as noted on its GitHub page.

However, the extension is only compatible with macOS Sonoma or later, excluding Windows and Linux. Windows users can still access their iCloud passwords by using iCloud for Windows alongside the iCloud Passwords extension for Chrome or Edge. There is anticipation that Apple will eventually extend Firefox support to Windows, similar to the recent update of Apple Podcasts for Mozilla's browser.

iCloud Passwords is a password manager that enables users to synchronize strong Safari passwords across Apple devices and Chrome on Windows. It leverages Apple's ecosystem to provide seamless access to saved credentials, enhancing user convenience and security. For those seeking alternatives, Bitwarden, KeePassXC, and KeePass offer robust password management solutions with varying features and cross-platform compatibility.

Only the extension name and page have been transferred to Apple, the new underlying code is not the original but the one created by Apple, and is no longer open source. Replacing an open source project with a proprietary one seems to be the Apple definition of "trust".
