Matrix 1.12 launches with new locked account state and the ability to mark rooms as unread
Matrix has unveiled version 1.12 of its decentralized communication protocol, introducing significant trust and safety features. A notable addition is the new locked account state, which allows for account preservation while preventing access, useful for thwarting brute force attacks or enforcing moderation decisions. This complements the existing active and deactivated states.
Additionally, users can now mark rooms as unread after reading, providing a way to flag content for later review, though it may not maintain a correct unread message count. The update also includes various enhancements and bug fixes, and also advises servers to implement a media freeze for improved performance and security.
Looking ahead, Matrix 1.13 is anticipated between late November and early December 2024, with Matrix 2.0 features nearing completion.
