Forgejo 9.0 launches with Copyleft license, go-git removal, soft-quota system, and more
Forgejo has released version 9.0, marking its first release under a copyleft license. This self-hosted and open source software forge aims to be lightweight and robust, with the removal of the go-git backend contributing to these goals. Version 9.0 introduces a soft-quota system to manage server disk usage, and push mirrors can now utilize SSH keys for authentication, replacing the user:password method.
The update allows release assets to be URLs, and removes Couchbase as a session provider. It also addresses a multi-architecture OCI leak and includes automated upgrade tests from Gitea v1.22. New features include accessibility keyboard support, arch package path grouping, an “Assign to me” button for pull requests and issues, RPM module signature support, journald log integration, and repository migration refactoring options.
Translation enhancements and UX improvements, particularly for the English locale, are also part of the release. Forgejo 9.0 will be supported until January 15, 2025, when version 10.0 is expected.

The transition from MIT to GPL v3 is already of good thing to prevent companies to overtake the project. AGPL would has been more appropriate but it seems it was problematic with EUPL. This is a good example of how opensource licenses could be a burden for most projects. It took decades before designers came to opensource communities, now it may be time to recruit lawyers.
