OpenSSL 1.1.1 series reaches End of Life and urges users to upgrade or buy premium support

OpenSSL, the comprehensive toolkit for cryptography and secure communication, has announced the End of Life (EOL) for its 1.1.1 series. As of September 11th, 2023, the OpenSSL 1.1.1 series, first released on September 11th, 2018 as a Long Term Support (LTS) release, will no longer receive publicly available security fixes. This is in line with the typical five-year lifespan of LTS releases.

Users who have downloaded their copy of OpenSSL 1.1.1 directly from the OpenSSL project are advised to upgrade to a newer version. The most recent version, OpenSSL 3.1, will have support until 14th March 2025. Alternatively, OpenSSL 3.0, an LTS release, will be supported until 7th September 2026.

For those who wish to continue using OpenSSL 1.1.1 beyond its public EOL date, OpenSSL offers a premium support contract. This contract provides extended support, including ongoing access to security fixes for the 1.1.1 series.
