Midjourney 5.2 introduces Panning feature to extend an image in any direction

Midjourney, a machine learning model similar to DALL-E 3 and Stable Diffusion, has introduced a new feature, as part of its 5.2 version, that allows users to “pan” images in different directions. This feature can be accessed directly within Discord, making it convenient for users to work on their images.

Underneath the image, users will find four arrow buttons ◀️ ▶️ 🔽 🔼, which can be clicked to extend the image in the desired direction. This feature is reminiscent of DALL-E 2's outpainting feature and offers users more flexibility in creating their images.

While this new feature brings exciting possibilities, it does come with a few limitations. For instance, variations are not supported on panned images, users cannot pan both horizontally and vertically on the same image, and they cannot control the amount of panning with each operation. However, users can change their prompt as they extend the image, allowing for the creation of panoramic stories and other creative projects.

Overall, Midjourney's new panning feature provides users with an enhanced image generation experience, allowing them to explore different perspectives and unleash their creativity. This comes only a week after Midjourney also introduced its “Zoom out” feature, which allows users to extend the canvas of an upscaled image beyond its original boundaries.
