Vimeo will end support for its TV apps on June 27th 2023

Vimeo, the popular video-sharing platform, has just announced that they will be ending support for their existing TV apps, including Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku. This change will come into effect on June 27, 2023.

This means that Vimeo will remove the TV apps from the app stores, and they will not publish any new releases, security updates, or provide technical support for TV apps. Vimeo is dropping support for these platforms because they believe that their users looking to view Vimeo videos will receive a better ongoing experience by casting via their mobile app, enabling customers to enjoy Vimeo content on their TV.

However, users will still be able to watch Vimeo videos on their TV by using the free iOS and Android apps or by using a supported browser. These apps can be used to cast via Apple AirPlay and Google Chromecast to their television.

Vimeo has been a popular platform for creators and users alike, and this change is sure to have a significant impact on the way people watch and share videos. It remains to be seen how this will affect Vimeo's user base and whether this change will be embraced by users or not.

Don't Google Cast and AirPlay transcode the video? That would be a pretty considerable downgrade, especially since one of Vimeo's main selling points is that their video quality is better than the crappy low-bitrate encodes of YouTube.

I'm not sure if casting from my phone could reach the same bitrate as when my Ethernet-connected TV streams directly (not to speak of the fact that it's really not ideal to burn through your phone's battery just to watch videos on your TV). I guess accessing Vimeo through the TV's browser will still be an option, if a much less comfortable one.

I feel sad to the 5 people who will be affected by this change.

Are they trying to kill the platform or what?
