Google to replace lock icon with tune icon in Chrome address bar for improved site settings and security
Google has announced that it will be replacing the lock icon in Google Chrome's address bar with a new "tune" icon. This decision is based on industry research and the prevalence of HTTPS, which has made security the default state for most websites.
The new icon is meant to emphasize that security should be the default state and make site settings more accessible. According to Google, the tune icon is more obviously clickable and commonly associated with settings or other controls.
Google also believes that the new icon will help make permission controls and additional security information more accessible, while avoiding the misunderstandings that plague the lock icon.
The new icon is set to launch in Chrome 117, which is expected to be released in early September 2023. This release will also include a general design refresh for desktop platforms.
