Gmail users report increase in Ads displayed in their inboxes

Google has long been known for its reliance on ads as a central part of its business model, and its email service, Gmail , is no exception. However, in the past few days, users have noticed an uptick in the number of ads being displayed in their inboxes.

For years, Gmail has shown ads to its users, but Google has always affirmed that it does not sell or use data from Gmail for ad targeting. The company has also stated that ads are not enabled for Workspace accounts, which are used by businesses and organizations.

However, in a recent statement, Google admitted that it is "experimenting" with new ad placements and formats in Gmail. And it seems that these experiments are starting to bear fruit, as users are reporting that they are seeing more ads than ever before.

One of the most noticeable changes is the addition of ads to Gmail's "Updates" filter, which is designed to capture emails related to orders, promotions, and billing statements. Previously, this filter was ad-free, but now it features two ads at the top, just like the other filters. Updates filter, now with more adsUpdates filter, now with more ads

In addition, some users are reporting that ads are now being mixed in with their emails under the various Gmail tabs, although it's unclear how widespread this change is.

Our take: This change is another proof that Google feeds off ads, but it's also a chance to search for a better mail provider. For example Vivaldi has already suggested on its Twitter profile that Vivaldi Mail is ad-free. Or Proton Mail which offers a free plan and announced that you can automatically forward messages from your Gmail address. Find the alternative you are looking for here in our list.
