FFmpeg unveils version 6.1 'Heaviside' with Vulkan decoding and enhanced VA API support

FFmpeg, the cross-platform software that enables recording, conversion and streaming of audio and video, has announced the release of its latest version 6.1, code-named “Heaviside”. The updated version brings Vulkan decoding to the table, offering support for H264, HEVC, and AV1. It also extends VA API (Video Acceleration API) support for libva-win32 on Windows.

In addition to these new capabilities, version 6.1 introduces several new decoders, filters, and other enhancements. Notably, it includes the libaribcaption decoder, Playdate video decoder and demuxer, afireqsrc audio source filter, arls filter, and zoneplate video source filter. It also incorporates the RivaTuner and vMix video decoders, along with a range of new Vulkan filters.

The new release also comes packed with an essential video coding parser, muxer, and demuxer, as well as a Microsoft RLE video encoder. These features are part of a comprehensive list of changes, new features, and bug fixes included in the 6.1 “Heaviside” version of FFmpeg.
