xenmaster's linux distro master list

Xen Master39 appsUpdated Aug 13, 2026

I have noticed in general that the recommendation list for alternatives on this site is broken when it comes to Linux Distros. Often times when looking for a server distro or gaming distros, I will get generic recommendations. This list seeks to provide true alternatives based on use-cases for the most popular Linux distributions out there!

Update: I've updated this list with new entries and categories for 2026 in a brand-new list: https://alternativeto.net/list/44491/xenmaster-s-2026-distro-hopper-guide/

Xen Master’s note
The name says it all, Steam came out with this to give users a distro that works for gamers and puts their platform at the forefront. GamerOS picked up where SteamOS left off when they were discontinued. You can technically run Steam on pretty much any distro as long as you follow the instructions or you can plug this in pre-installed and let the good times roll!
