FocusWriter has similar window customization, such as, background/foreground colour, font size and type selection and sizing. It is also Portable and is also free. Not as many features as WriteMonkey, but the distraction-free enviroment is the same.

They're about even. I did a lot of writing with both of them.

The key to good writing is not that magical glass of Bordeaux, the right kind of tobacco or that groovy background music. The key is focus. What you need to write well is a spartan setting that allows you to fully concentrate on your text and nothing but your text.

WriteMonkey is for distraction-free writing, and novelWriter helps you organize your story. Therefore these two applications have different purposes, but I like them both, depending on what I intend to do.
