    • Spideroak both syncs AND backs up your files. Dropbox is not a backup service. Most importantly, Spideroak encrypts files on your computer before uploading them to their servers, which means only you can see your files and no one else. Dropbox doesn't do this, which means that Dropbox employees could access your files, which a much less private solution. Guest • Nov 2016 Disagree   Agree
    • Dropbox is not a good SpiderOak alternative because: 1) It doesn't offer end-to-end encryption and the privacy advantages that offers (that's a big deal), 2) it's emphasis is on sync, SpiderOak offers sync and backup. Dropbox has been reported to be an NSA surveillance target; SpiderOak has no such concerns because of its encryption system. Parts of SO are open source. JohnFastmanDec 2016 Disagree   Agree

    • If you just upload your files to Google Drive, two things happen: 1) you can sync them across different computers and access them from your Google/Gmail account, 2) they are stored on Google's servers in a way that Google can scan them and have access to their content. Spideroak allows you to backup AND sync your files, but in a way that your files and their contents are only accessible to you, no one else. JohnFastmanDec 2016 Disagree   Agree

    • MEGA is similar to SpiderOak because it claims to encrypt your files locally before upload and not have the keys to decrypt them ("zero-knowledge"). However, since its inception, MEGA has been mired in various controversies and has had security flaws detected (since fixed). SO has enjoyed a solid reputation. Both MEGA and SO can become slow when dealing with large numbers of files (not necessarily large files). JohnFastmanDec 2016 Disagree   Agree

    • OneDrive is bundleware integrated into MS Windows. It seeks to "help" you by syncing your files, even every MS Office document you write by default. (Switch that off!) It's intrusive, and it seeks to upload unencrypted versions of your files to MS servers. SO is a privacy-oriented company that encrypts your files in a way that makes them accessible only to you. Both sync your files, but SO respects your privacy. There also isn't a Linux sync agent for OD. JohnFastmanDec 2016 Disagree   Agree

    • pCloud are a Swiss (strong privacy laws) hosted sync service, similar to Dropbox. They are a partial SpiderOak alternative because they offer the option to have an encrypted folder to which only you have the password, and the contents of which only you can read. That is SpiderOak's whole way of working, so pCloud are a partial alternative. Uploads/Downloads are very fast though. Also Linux-friendly. JohnFastmanDec 2016 Disagree   Agree
