I have been using freemind for a couple of years and its very good, looking into other opensource alternatives now just to see if there is anything else better out there which keeps competition going ! :)
If only programs like this freed themselves of the need to have a central/master/anchor concept.It's much easier if you can have the CHOICE of having a number of central nodes...like Compendim or cmap tools.
I think Freeplane (a fork of FreeMind) has implemented this feature -- try it out and let the developers know if it serves your purpose. The community seems more active and user focused, so you should get a response.
I love freemind. I just wish there was more active development going on with the project.
