Just a little background as to why I like Windows Defender. As a little side job I spend evenings and weekends straightening out computer issues for home users. The majority of my clients use Windows, and most are already up to Win 10.

Over the years I've seen a problem repeat itself. People will buy an AV software and once it expires, they frequently stop paying for it. As we all know, an outdated set of signature files quickly reduces the value of the anti-virus software. And when using free versions of some AV software, they are often running reduced functionality or have frequent nag messages to pay for it. Many users get confused at this point.

With Windows Defender there is no paid version, no nag messages, and no cessation of updates due to lapsed subscription. For me and my clients, this is a huge plus.

Finally, over the years since the days of MSSE and the original "Defender" program I have found Microsoft's security software to be on par with the best free and paid anti-virus software. Now the latest version Windows Defender seems to have upped their game to an even higher level.

Bottom line. Using Windows Defender is IMHO a better alternative than many free AVs and frankly even the paid AVs. It's my default choice for my clients, unless they insist on something else.

Computer security depends more on the user's browsing habits than on the brand of the Antivirus, Microsoft Defender works well and is sufficient on W10, now, it's better to learn also good security practices that an Antivirus doesn't replace.

Has improved their security over the last years. It is not ***t as it used to be.

This has become very decent antivirus product, I can now feel a sense of security of using it. Of course Microsoft has still a lot way to go until it can compet with big AV companies.

I recommend this to people who are just casually browsing the web with an adblock on and without visiting any shady websites and you're good to go but not recommended if you are going to visit the absolute shadiest of all websites.

Windows Defender is also good if you combine it with Malwarebytes (On demand scanning only), it will finish off almost everything Defender wasn't able to clean.

For free this might be the best software available.

Windows Defender, which is the general public version and lighten of paying solutions for companies, is the best Antivirus for W10, because it's the only one to be properly implemented to the system's source code, all other third-party antivirus software can cause slowdowns, bugs, false positives and are rarely clean on privacy (well, it's true, Microsoft is one of the worst in this field), and if you really need a semblance of more security because of your threat model without wanting to go through a Microsoft product , Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium is also a choice.

Sometimes detects viruses/spyware in harmless software.

I like it for the fact that it's already there on my Windows computer and it gives enough protection for the time while I research other AVs and look for a better alternative. And there are better alternatives out there that catch more nasties and give me more peace of mind (such as Bitdefender for one).
