I have been using Visual Studio for 4 years and it hasn't let me down not even once. Most reliable, easy to use and powerful IDE I've ever tried.

It is more intuitive to use (as a basic text/code editor) than Sublime or Atom, and seems a bit more out of the box ready - they all have Pro's and cons. VS is gaining traction at time of writing. I am also interested in JetBrains for fulll IDE's or Spyder etc.

Very complete? Yes, it's so complete it's cumbersome. And if you think downloading 15+ GB of installers is annoyng, wait until you try to uninstall it. It's like a curse, you'll never get rid of it completely!

Try not to install complete package, use visual studio installer software and remove those applications, which you don't want.

Essential for the Windows environment

Various releases (from version 6, up to now) can have more or less features, reflected on more or less responsiveness. What's important is that if you're developing Windows base applications, well, you can't do without it.
Besides the good developing environment (editor, projects, etc.) what's superlative is its debugging system. If you're working on more that a hello-world application, that can score (and save your day).

Wow. Talk about bloatware. It takes about 20 minutes and 3 GB to install.
Then it takes minutes to startup.
Then when you figure out how to create a C++ project, it doesn't seem to know anything about C or C++, marking all standard library calls as "unknown reference".
It certainly doesn't know how to make or compile C++ source code either.
I'll stick to Eclipse, thank you very much.
