Good 2D/3D CAD program. 3D modeling is well implemented. VariCAD, especially 3D modelling, is well suited for me to professionally design machines under Linux operating system. But the poor functionality of the 2D drawing tools and the poor interaction with the support forum undermine the benefits of the program.

  1. Multi-platform. Has equivalent versions for Windows and Linux.
  2. Small. Approximately 100MB download and less than 250MB installed.
  3. Fast and reliable. It does not require huge computer resources. Works even on the average laptop without fails and freezes.
  4. Well-equipped. Has 2D/3D libraries of the standard parts and profiles ANSI, DIN and others. Also contains standard libraries for creating 2D drawings and schemas, applications for calculating machine mechanisms and parts.
  5. Very affordable price.
  6. Unicode characters cannot be added directly to the text, but only copied from a text file.
  7. Does not support multi-page drawings.
  8. Rather inconvenient work with 2D drawings. In particular, the commands are implemented in such a way that performing common tasks in the 2D area requires the user to perform many unnecessary actions.

VariCAD is not ideal, but it is fit its purpose and has good value for money. However, without improving the tools for 2D drawing, it will not be popular.

Because I designed a fuel system block that grossed 500k the first year in marketed. Got my moneys worth on that CAD package. Who needs solidworks or autocad? not me. Simple to switch between 3d and 2d of the same drawing too.
