Univention Corporate Server 4.2-1 now available

This latest update includes various detail improvements and error corrections. Some of the most important changes are:

The forwarding of e-mails per each mail user can now be saved in the UCS management system.
Improvements in changing the password in the Univention Management Console: From now on, also users from a Microsoft Active Directory domain can change their expired passwords. In addition, more hints are now displayed if the password change should fail.
The possibilities for IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) configuration have been improved in various services, for example in the Nagios or proxy server configuration and in the UCS management system.

Univention Corporate Server 4.2 was published on April 4, 2017 and includes an improved operating concept and lots of new technology underneath.

Some of its major new features are:

  • A configurable web portal for administrators and end users that provides an overview of the services installed in the domain
  • systemd as the new default startup system
  • Improved usability and user guidance of the password self service
  • Update to Samba 4.66 with lots of detail improvements and better performance.
  • Update to Kernel 4.91.
  • Update to Docker 1.12.
  • Update of the virtualization components QEMU / KVM from version 1.1 to version 2.8.
  • Change from Debian 7 (Wheezy) to Debian 8 (Jessie)

First milestone of Univention Corporate Server 4.2 released

On Feb 7 Univention published the first milestone of Univention Corporate Server 4.2 which is scheduled for release beginning of April. This milestone already includes major features such as a pre-release version of the upcoming Samba 4.6, a change from Debian basis Wheezy to Jessie, a change to the default boot system systemd and a pre-release version of the new Linux kernel 4.9. UCS 4.1-4 Released: More stability in large environments + Easier Docker config + Now in French

On November 8, Univention Corporate Server was released bringing many software and kernel updates to enhance security, stability and drivers for better hardware support.

Some of the technical improvements are:

  • Installation wizard and management system now in French
  • Update to Samba 4.5.1
  • Update to the latest long-term Linux kernel 4.1 version
  • Optimizations in the ares of DRS replication, compatibility of UCS with Active Directory, file services, printer handling, and OpenLDAP configuration
  • Faster and better synchronization of objects between OpenLDAP and the Samba 4 directory in large environments
  • Active Directory Connector now supports the synchronization of groups with more than 1,500 members
  • Easier configuration and maintenance of Docker apps in the Univention App Center
  • Important security updates, among other things, for Bind9, MySQL, OpenSSL, and the Linux kernel

Univention Corporate Server 4.1-3 released: Better usability and Docker-based apps

UCS 4.1-3 was released on August 9, 2016. This release includes various usability improvements, important security updates and all errata updates that have been published in the last three months.
Some of the new features at a glance:**

  • Various important security updates, among others for libvirt, OpenSSL, QEMU and Samba
  • Elimination of potential security risks in the LDAP ACLs
  • Stabilization of the replication mechanisms, for example as to the renaming of LDAP objects with several RDNs (Relative Distinguished Names)
  • The login into the UMC (Univention Management Console) now also works with Chrome 51.
  • Various improvements of the App Center’s Docker integration such as the running of join scripts in Docker containers and the registration on the UCS overview page.
  • Apps can now be provided with an individual branding and a fast demonstration mode and can also be easier “dockerized”.
  • The Docker daemon start options can now easily be configured via UCR.
  • The default Docker image for apps has been modified so that the cron daemon starts per default.
  • User objects in the management system can now be extended by further options via the use of extended attributes.
  • Various improvements of the translation process make it easier for third-parties to offer UCS in another language.
  • Various detail improvements of the local certification tools such as further UCR variables for an easier configuration and the maintenance of server certificates when server objects are moved within the directory service.
  • A snapshot via UVMM (Univention Virtual Machine Manager) is now also possible with virtual machines of more than 4 GB RAM.
  • Increase of the default RPC timeouts in the DRS replication to allow the join of another Samba-based Active Directory domain controller with more than 100,000 directory objects.
  • Configuration settings for the database management system MySQL can now be defined via UCR variables.

UCS 4.1-2 comes with numerous improvements in usability, security + Active Directory interoperability

Some of the highlights are:

  • Security updates for Samba, Apache, OpenSSL and the GNU C-library
  • Update to Samba 4.3.7 with various security updates, closure of the Badlock bug, among other things.
  • Access of the UCS Active Directory Connector to the standard interfaces of the Active Directory for the synchronization of passwords
  • Improvements of the Bootloader configuration of GRUB for the serial console and hence the easier use of UCS by visually impaired administrators
  • Better support for the use of the UMC via mobile devices
  • Adaptations of the App Center such as information on the licensing conditions of apps
  • New sorting function and display of more details in the DNS module
  • Performance improvements of the print quota

Roadmap 2016 for UCS 4.1: Docker-based apps in Univention App Center and integration of Microsoft Office 365 and Google Apps for Work

Univention has published the roadmap for UCS 4.1 in 2016. The fourth generation of UCS now performs three functions at the same time: Serving as a runtime environment for apps, as an app management system, and as a solution to simply set up servers in on-premise and cloud environments.

Thanks to the integration of Docker-based apps in the App Center such as the server automation software Jenkins or the business solution TecArt, Univention is currently working on the integration of proprietary software, for example Google Apps for Work, Office 365 and Microsoft Exchange 2013.

Univention Corporate Server 4.1-1 ready to download with Linux/Samba update and AD improvements

Last night, Univention released the first point release of UCS 4.1. In addition to all errata updates issued for UCS 4.1-0, UCS 4.1-1 includes a significant amount of improvements in the areas of usability, performance and security as well as enhancements and bug fixes.

Here is an overview of the major changes:

  • Update of Linux kernel to 4.1.16
  • Update to Samba 4.3.3 improves compatibility to Active Directory as well as the DRS replication
  • Performance increase of the Directory service replication now leads to much faster domain joins with thousands of users
  • Numerous security updates, among others, for MySQL, OpenJDK or the Bootloader Grub
  • UCS Virtual Machine Manager (UVMM) now supports the migration of stopped virtual machines and
  • UVMM can now also manage Virtual Private Clouds (VPC) in Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Univention published UCS 4.1 with important new features.

Most important innovations are:

  • Support of Docker-based apps in the Univention App Center
  • Single sign-on in the UCS management system via SAML technology
  • Even safer login process via optional two-factor authentication
  • User self-service for the password reset
  • Usability improvements and more transparent interface for the App Center
  • Technical basis: Linux longterm kernel 4.1.12, OpenLDAP version 2.4.42 and Samba 4.3.1

The new UCS version 4.1 is available online to download for free as VM or ISO image.

Release of UCS 4.0-3 with ready to use apps for various virtualization environments

The third point release 4.0-3 of Univention Corporate Server was released today. It provides numerous bugfixes and (security) updates as well as improvements in design and usability of the UCS management system.

New is the automatic creation of Univention Apps for all major virtualization environments (VMware, VMware ESX, VirtualBox, and KVM) that are ready for use and instantly available via the Univention App Center. Univention Apps are complete applications consisting of the UCS platform, its identity management system, and the app itself such as ownCloud, Open-Xchange, Zarafa, or Bareos. They come with an automatic patch, update, and life cycle management and can be easily integrated into existing (Active Directory) environments.

Further highlights of UCS 4.0-3 are:

  • Increase in performance of the UCS mail component thanks to the integration of the mail server Dovecot as UCS' default IMAP/POP3 server
  • Faster navigation within the management interface via the use of the web browser's back and forth button
  • Provision of additional LDAP filters that limit the efficacy of LDAP-based guidelines to objects matching the filters
  • Update to the latest Samba software version 4.2.3 with improvements in the DRS replication and as to the handling of printer drivers
  • Latest, stable „longterm“ Linux kernel 3.16, which includes various security updates as well as additional and updated drivers for improved hardware support.

New: Univention Apps - Enterprise Applications instantly ready for use via the Univention App Center

Univention has created a cool combination of an existing app from the Univention App Center, the Univention App Platform, which is based on Univention Corporate Server, and the UCS management system. These ready apps can be very easily started as virtual machines or installed locally.

Good thing is they integrate seamlessly with each other and into existing (Active Directory) environments, and come with integrated update mechanisms. The range of these Univention Apps is wide, from groupware and document management up to filesync/-sharing and backup solutions.

Univention Apps are for end users who want ready-to-use business applications, on the cloud or on-premises, combined with an easy identity management and the possibility to integrate them into the existing IT environment.

Univention also invites cloud service providers to integrate the Univention App Platform into their provisioning system to offer their customers an individual selection or the entire range of available Univention Apps.

Also app vendors are welcome to certify their apps for the Univention App Platform to take advantage of the steadily growing network of cloud service providers that are offering Univention Apps.

Update for the Univention Corporate Server's App Center - Numerous New Apps from ERP to Software Distribution for Windows Clients

The Univention App Center, which is part of Univention Corporate Server (UCS), is providing more and more business solutions that can be centrally managed via UCS' management system.

The following apps have been added recently and more are in the pipeline:

  • opsi - software distribution solution for Windows clients

  • MobyDick - VoIP telephone system solution

  • privacyIDEA4UCS - Two-factor authentication tool with extension for PAM- and Radius-based apps

  • Fortnox for OX App Suite - a business software that is integrated in the groupware OX App Suite

  • Odoo - ERP system for all kinds of business fields such as finance, marketing, HR etc.

These and further apps can all be found and easily tested via the Univention App Center.


Release of Univention Corporate Server 4.0-2

The second patchlevel release of UCS 4 has been published today including numerous user feedback-based improvements in the areas of usability and security plus a wide range of bug fixes.

Completely new is the integration of the Linux container technology Docker to run Docker containers on UCS which is the first step to enabling the App Center to handle Docker images. Univention will thus strengthening the App Center as the central and secure platform for the operation of different applications.

Further Highlights:

  • UCS now for free without limitations for everyone incl. companies with the UCS Core Edition
  • Automatic configuration of apps from the App Center when performing remote installations
  • New tutorial for ISVs about how to package for UCS as well as how to include apps in the UCS management system and make them available via the App Center
  • Usability improvement, e.g., as to the login-process, when importing the license and within the configuration assistant
