What I believe to be the best free keystroke launcher for macOS. It's not as fully featured as Alfred (can create workflows, but not with the beautiful visuals), but it works well with quicker features than others such as quick web searching (i.e., !g BLANK when compared to Lacona's feature where you have to type in "search google BLANK)

great app for searching files and folders with many additional features. i switched from another app because this one is open source. i'm using this for about 3 or 4 months. search function requires you to enter the absolute path, eg. C:\users\orange\lectures and then you can search the files and folders inside lectures. but you can quickly autocomplete names with tab. adding everything search plugin is possible but again it's closed source. it's nice that that's just optional.

it's also a launcher. you can launch any app without specifying the location.

other than these i use web search function for wikipedia, some dictionaries i like, duckduckgo images etc. and i set shortcuts for the folders i used the most.

As of this exact date, 2020-08-31, this is my current favorite launcher. Past history of favorites in chronological order: LaunchBar (when using macOS), Keypirinha (when starting using Windows), Wox, then Listary. Reason for switching over from Listary (which I liked a lot) is because of its current stale development. Also, who doesn't love free and open-source. Something that I was wary about when it comes to ueli was the use of Electron, but that doesn't seem to affect things badly.

Plus points for ueli that I love:

  • Portable release!
  • Low memory footprint AFAICT
  • Very friendly UI & settings
  • Reset to Default button on each setting/plugin – very nice (every program should have this)
  • Can be used in pretty powerful ways, if needed, but comes quite simply set up out-of-the-box
  • Actively developed
