SyncToy Reviews

Simple

about SyncToy · · Helpful Not helpful 1 Helpful

Wasn't looking for anything complex when syncing web site files between my local copy and the server. SyncToy simply did the trick with very little hastle. If only every Microsoft product worked in such a normal way.

Reliable

about SyncToy · · Helpful Not helpful 1 Helpful

I've been using Synctoy since version 1 for years, on Windows XP, Vista and 7, in order to sync files between my desktop PC and server files and my laptop.

It just works - in a soooo non-microsoftish way ;) -, and cleverly shall I say (you know dealing with files renames or moves, etc).

SyncToy cannot sync a WebDAV-Folder

about SyncToy and Allway Sync · · Helpful Not helpful 1 Helpful

No other free application than Allway Sync (*) is able to sync directly and reliable a WebDAV-Folder or SD-Memory-Card from a "Windows Mobile" SmartPhone with a Vista PC Folder.
After detailed comparison with many other syncing applications I recommend Allway Sync as the best one, if you have no problems with the restriction of max. 40000 files per months for free private use.

SyncToy: synchronisation prozess was not reliable

about SyncToy and Synk, Allway Sync, PureSync · · Helpful Not helpful 1 Helpful

I have tested SyncToy many month ago on Windows XP. In my indistinct recollection the synchronisation prozess was not reliable, concerning synchronizing in BOTH directions inluding DELETION in BOTH directions, so that i very soon changed to the very reliable professional products Allway Sync (free until max. 20000 files/ month or PureSync free without limitations for private use. The Open Source product SYNKRON is also very reliable, but You cannot see in the file-list (but only in a hint if moving with the mouse over the filename) the size, date and time of the synced files after comparing process.

Uh, I tried to install it on Windows XP, didn't work. So I tried Allway Sync and it did the job right.

At least under windows 7, synctoy is not reliable

I also noted that at least under windows 7, synctoy is not reliable. It did not copy everything. I used version 2.1.

SyncToy fails to replace deleted backup files

about SyncToy · · Helpful Not helpful -1 Helpful

SyncToy will not copy a file more than once. If a file is deleted at the destination folder for whatever reason, it will not be replaced. This software is garbage. You've been warned. I recommend FreeFileSync, but watch out for the toolbar adware.

Dropped Synctoy in favour of FreeFileSync

about SyncToy · · Helpful Not helpful -1 Helpful

OK, I reckon SyncToy served me well for many years, but one day it started to act weirdly. So I tried FreeFileSync, which works fine, is actively developped (main drawback of SyncToy), and gives a lot of handy options.

Useless: Will not copy files that are in use

about SyncToy and Synkron, FreeFileSync · · Helpful Not helpful -1 Helpful

SyncToy will not copy files that are in use which makes is somewhat useless for my needs. I recommend FreeFileSync with VSS (Volume Shadow Service) for this purpose. Easier to use and it doesn't freeze up like Synkron does.
