There are a few programs that do fairly well with screen recording, but ScreenToGif's included editor and available output options are a step above other great, free tools. I've used this over and over again to write bug reports, create demonstrations, and explain weird UI issues. Thanks to STG, everything I make is dense both in size and content thanks to the program's included compression and cleanup tools, including crop, delete, and the ability to remove unneeded colors.

One of the nicest, open-source gif-editors around!

Originally i was just searching for an easy-to-handle video-to-gif editor/encoder.
After trying out several applications this is the one i ended up with and it's simply great!

The GUI is nice and light-weight. It handles pretty intuitive, but keeps a whole lot of options and editing tools to choose from.

Was very easily able to make a good quality gif with this app, the capture window fitting perfectly to a VLC window with one click. Seems very versatile with a lot of options to configure if you want to dive deep.

While it is a powerful tool, it is heavily not recommended to record whole screen, if you have <4GB RAM. In my old laptop, it overloaded the RAM and the whole system failed to function (meaning needing to hard-reset).

The same goes for importing clips into the editor. Don't import big clips, if you don't have enough RAM (if you really need to, just find a free video editor and use Handbrake to convert to Webm. They'll be smaller in size and way better quality. In all honesty, gifs are rather redundant in this age).

Hi, with v2.20, I believe that these two issues are gone. I implemented a new capture mode, which uses less resources and I also reworked the implementation of the video importer.

Crashes in Windows. Even the installer crashes.

Hi James, I'm the developer of the app.

Did you try running the latest version available? (2.26.1 -> July 2020)

I would like to know more about the crash. Can you contact me via www.screentogif.com/contact ?
