Versatail Home Automation Solution

about openHAB · · Helpful Not helpful 5 Helpful

I had my fair share of endeavors with closed and open home automation solutions and this one really hit it off. openHAB is an amazingly flexible center for your smart home, regardless if you are playing around with ESP8266's or driving a whole KNX installation. It's open source and the almost 200 add-ons can talk to nearly everything out there, from Z-Wave over Alexa and IFTTT, your Tesla car and up to whatever you get onto MQTT.
One warning though: "With great power comes great responsibility" ;) openHAB is not a point and shoot adventure. Setting up your SmartHome takes a few minutes but it's totally worth it! Happy Hacking ;)

Simply to install and configure. Excellent architecture with a simple and clear separation between hardware and thing. I developed a setup of Raspberry Pi + Arduino connected over RTU Modbus in few days just with copy past of simple example.

OpenHAB offers plenty of connectors to a wide variety of data source, be it hardware stuffs (sensors, devices, ...) or software ones (weather forecast services, ...).
Its scripting features are pretty powerful once learned, especially when associated to a persistence store.

One drawback though : the learning curve is quite steep. It takes time and reading to really get the best out of it. But once it is done, you are ready to automate anything you want in your place !
