I used the free version for a long time and I didn't mind the ads. Eventually I might have even bought the full version. Some months ago the free version started using push notification advertising (i.e. ads are placed in your notification bar). It's practically a virus at this point and I wouldn't even get their paid version if it was 1 penny!

The original reason I liked this app was because it wasn't a widget and I've understood that widgets use more CPU time (i.e. they drain the battery faster). As for widget-based alternatives though, Elixir and Power Control are nice.
