Joplin VS Microsoft OneNote
Is Joplin a good alternative to Microsoft OneNote?Comments about Joplin as an Alternative to Microsoft OneNote
dasonicSame structure as Onenote, supports images, looks modern.
Doesn't have all the same features (like drawing on the screen) but also has its own unique features Onenote doesn't have.
Also runs on Linux, which is the biggest plus for me.
13pretty and very clear user interface
11Martin Ligabueit doesn't have pen input support
6Nuncio Bitisit doesn't do diagrams, and the plain text files it creates are given obscure names so you can't find them.
0ThunderFoxOnenote allows you to write or draw wherever you want on the screen while Joplin is limited. It makes sense, as Joplin stores everything in plain markdown documents, but it's something severely lacking in all of the Onenote alternatives I've seen.

Zim VS Microsoft OneNote
Is Zim a good alternative to Microsoft OneNote?Comments about Zim as an Alternative to Microsoft OneNote
LordMaxWonderful. Every file is a .txt file, so you're in total control.
18axcqhsbsadoukcioztYou are better of using a cellulose notepad rather than OneNote which siphons all your data unencrypted to "the cloud"
0Zim is more like simplenote, or a desktop wiki. It is missing most of the functionality of onenote.
19k71It´s like Windows Notepad, but you can make trees of notes (subnotes), it´s easy, quick, and recognize links to show them as links. Not synchronized between devices. Local, No stored in the web. No password needed.
I like it, but stop using it as I started using OneNote for almost everything.
Apps I´ve tried and in order of preference: onenote, cinta notes, evernote, zim, standard notes, Simple notes, turtl, joplin, elephant.
0RemovedUserI like Zim as it stores information in an open source and flat file format directly using the computer file system. So you can the software as a kind of file explorer with the difference that you have a note associated with each folder of your computer. From my point of view, it is really structuring my numeric environment. After discovering it, I would not return to OneNote and other kinds of note taking apps I tried.

Xournal++ VS Microsoft OneNote
Is Xournal++ a good alternative to Microsoft OneNote?Comments about Xournal++ as an Alternative to Microsoft OneNote
violoncelloWith Xournal++ you own your notes and can save them wherever you want - you are not forced to store them somewhere in the cloud as it's the case with OneNote
2Nearly similar interface. Lightweight, open source with latex support and voice notes. Flexible layout which was missing in xournal.
1In the version available for Chromebooks, the option for typed text is not working.
0BachoSevenCross-platform and well supporting stylus pens, Xournalpp implements most if not all funcionalities of OneNote, including recording audio alongside pen strokes. Plus, it's free and open source!
1komp12321It is full open source, Supports handwriting (stylus) Allows to create annotations on PDF-s (OneNote doesn't)

Notion VS Microsoft OneNote
Is Notion a good alternative to Microsoft OneNote?Comments about Notion as an Alternative to Microsoft OneNote
raphaelaguiarBetter visualization and flexible organization. Keeps your information in a multi-hierarchical wiki, not in notes,
3Leo TNotion is better for vizualisation and is free, but the huge drawback is the desktop application. It is an embedded browser (Chrome actually), so its RAM and CPU usages are far behind OneNote : around 1% CPU average for Notion, vs OneNote with 0% average ; 300Mb RAM usage, vs 60Mb for OneNote. This impacts directly user experience and battery life, and also loading times. OneNote is loading quasi instantly, and Notion is taking 5s to load.
0Biggest feature of Onenote is drawing & typing everywhere, which Notion doesn't support. Notion is good to store highly structured data, while Onenote is more like a digital paper.
9rongmuNotion is aesthetic, powerful and highly flexible. You can mix different types of contents within one page. Markdown formatting for texts. Sub-pages for wiki-like or hierarchical organization. Databases for a of lot data; a database comes with multiple possible views and you can choose the one that best suits your data.
-1infinite nesting, cross platform, powerful edting and embed tools

Standard Notes VS Microsoft OneNote
Is Standard Notes a good alternative to Microsoft OneNote?Comments about Standard Notes as an Alternative to Microsoft OneNote
Encrypted, very lightweight and not owned by Microsoft.
1The free version is only plain text editing - can't even paste images or use bold and italics. There simply aren't enough features in the free one to determine whether I like it enough to pay for premium.
5k71Good for those options to store online or sync between devices. Devices: Windows app, web-browser, android app...
I prefer this one than SimpleNote, in any case, to share between devices nowadays i recommend telegram or protectedtext. For text, Onenote. I didnt like turtl, joplin or elephant.
0AnipeVery, VERY BASIC, its open source and free but its basic and the features it offers are paid compared to one note's free model
3Don't have sections or pages, just notes.
