Anti-censorship free platform. Attacked by all left-hand platforms and those belonging to the system such as Facebook and Twiter

reply

Anti-censorship. Just don't break the rules, don't be gay, trans, brown, black, asian, bi, too left-wing or too liberal, and you might be okay.

@redbeardt: There are homosexuals on Gab. And I'm not just talking about Milo Yiannopoulos. There's a LGBT group on there. There are also homosexuals who aren't on board with the LGBT agenda; for instance, homos who have been banned from Twitter for refusing to call transgenders by their "proper pronouns." There are also Jews, blacks (e.g. Jesse Lee Peterson), Asians, East Indians, pagans, witches, feminists, vegans, goths, drug legalization advocates -- anything you can imagine.

None of these groups are in the majority, obviously, but there's a difference between being in a minority and not being allowed to post on the site at all. No one is going to be silenced or banned for holding an unpopular opinion or belonging to an unpopular group.

I see a lot of straight up lies in these reviews. Gab can be as friendly place as any other and in fact far more open than others. The only difference is they do not censor speech. If you are afraid of "words" hurting your feelings, then this may not be the place for you. On the other hand if you are looking for open discussion on almost any topic then I do highly recommend it.

This is simply a lie.

What some people call extreme, others call it freedom of speech. For those who gave the warning about GAB because they read leftist publications like Salon, want to warn that GAB is not controlled by Marxist like their twitter.

People were removed from twitter because they would share ideas, other than the planned agenda by the far left.

Free Speech in America is expected.

Does a better job than twitter and actually stands for free speech.

Unless it's art*

Unless you're a "degenerate" according to its userbase.

It's good, definitely does NOT deserve the bum rap it's gotten. I see a lot of reviews try to throw them under the woke bus, but honestly... unless you're the kind of person who actively goes out of their way to be offended, you'll be fine. Tons of communities for whatever you're into, art, memes, tech, and more.
You wont be deplatformed here for having a "spicy take". But, they do actively ban "illegal speech" (That is, things that are outright illegal) and have helped the FBI prosecute some very sick people who tried to use the site to organize some very bad things... So don't come in thinking its some lawless wasteland of extremists.
In fact, much of the illegal content posted to these alt-social sites have come from people specifically trying to give the platform a bad name.
I rate it 4/5, as the only drawback (for me) is the lack of a good video player without having to use another outside site to embed.

I had high hopes for Gab when it first started. Of course the problem with trying to create an alternative to mainstream apps is that they tend to attract for the most part large swaths of individuals of the same mindset, who believe they are being oppressed. To a certain degree I think they are, but the problem is that the new alternative social network becomes dominated by those few ideological orientations, some of whom those from the mainstream would find distasteful and unpleasant to be around, so... no one else wants to go there, because those pet topics are typically all the occupants want to talk about.

Nevertheless, I tried to stick it out and promote it because I believe that there needs to be someplace on the web where you can be sure to speak your mind completely free of censorship, so long as it's legal. And that was the founding motto and policy at Gab to start with: "If it's legal, it's allowed", unfortunately, because Gab has come to be dominated in large part by right-wing Christians and the founder/owner is a right-wing Christian, they've decided that pornography isn't speech and it's distasteful (but Nazi's aren't?) and thus it's banned. I don't really want to see porn there, but that's not the point, the whole reason Gab was supposed to exist was to be a platform for liberty and free expression and of course once you choose one thing (that's legal) that is to be deemed offensive, well, you've just obliterated the purpose of what is otherwise a shitty internet forum with lots of abrasive, low-IQ individuals spouting about their ill-formed ideals; considering the population there, I'm positive that it won't be the first thing to be disallowed. People have paid for long term premium subscriptions based on the idea that this was supposed to be a completely free forum and so they've become lying, stealing, deceptive Christians now. Basically, it's turning into a digital theocratic echochamber/fiefdom.

Since when did being a christian, believing that Jesus Christ died for our sins become lying, stealing, and deceptive? The problem is, you are a Marxist trying to call a religion bad to raise your own leftist ideological views. The website allows everyone to have free speech, not just the leftist agenda. The leftist is not comfortable having a real debate. Leftist only want their words to be heard ad not allow speech from others. Anyone has the opportunity to share their views on Gab (As long as they are legal). If you don't want to listen to the Christians, don't listen to them.

Dumb review from jbass_40. Believing that Jesus Christ died for our sins isn't lying, stealing, and deceptive; saying you run an app that is for free speech, using that as your pitch to take money from paying customers, and then banning speech you don't like is lying, stealing, and deceptive. And it isn't 'being a marxist' to point that out.

I agree that Gab seemed like a good idea, but it's fallen short, particularly due to Torba's weird behavior on twitter when it comes to his anti-pornography tirades. He's free to believe what he likes, but posting that kind of polarizing stuff from the official gab account was a bad move, especially when he could have just said "gab is sfw only" and moved on.

I believe in free speech, but I'm not as much of an absolutist as you. There are plenty of sex sites on the web, if that's what someone is into, but the number of platforms where you can question mainstream media narratives or express a political view that's to the right of Howard Zinn is dwindling. From a practical perspective, I don't see any good reason for Gab to host porn. That's not why I go there, and if I wanted to look at skin, there are literally thousands of other sites I could choose from.

Very good alternative to twitter and a place to be if you enjoy free thinking and speech.

This site is full of nice, ordinary folks who hate censorship. The only valid form of censorship is self censorship, the decision by the individual about what they want to allow in their life. If you join Gab you decide who to follow. There are a few bad apples, just like twitter and FB, but you don't have to follow them. If someone you decide to follow says something offensive (or just politically different than the company culture), you have the assurance that big brother isn't going to "fix it" by removing a dissenting opinion.

reply

Except art, that can be censored if bible thumpers don't like it.

I urge readers to disregard DavesPlanet's review. This site is not full of "nice, ordinary" folk. It is a widely known haven for far-right extremists. Steer clear.

If avoiding censorship is your jam, then signing up for another centralised social media platform is a waste of your time anyway. You're perhaps only marginally less likely to be harassed or banned on Gab. Check out decentralised and federated social media platforms like Mastodon and Diaspora.

Gab gets a bum rap, because some very bad people tried to use the platform to do some very bad things (or they did it specifically to give Gab a bad reputation) I'll tell ya right now, Gab is awesome, I've seen it's communities are active and passionate and the people behind it are committed to making it everything they can. Gab is a pro free speech... but that's not to say you can talk about ANYTHING there... some speech is illegal (Like, actually legally illegal, not just "against our ToS" illegal), and that confuses a lot of people... That their is a difference between "free speech" and "illegal speech"...

gab Actually gives you a platform. If you are Conservative or Progressive, it gives you equal opportunity either way. No one gets censored for political speech.

Gab lives up to its reputation of being a right-wing echo chamber. If you like Trump and dislike Islam, China, and Democrats, you'll feel right at home. Gab denies this, but between using a frog that is associated with the alt-right as a logo and a news ticker populated with stories from neocon publications like Breitbart and World Net Daily, it's obvious that it is not politically neutral.

That said, Gab is one of the very few platforms that champions free speech, and since it is directly funded by its community, it does not sell your information to third parties like the Silicon Valley tech giants do. If you're tired of the censorship and surveillance of Facebook, Twitter, and Google, I would recommend Gab, regardless of your political persuasion.
