      First: Yes it is more complicated because it offers much more options. Second: Handbrake can be as fast as Freemake but then it will produce the same low quality output. Third: Handbrake is cross platform.

      HandBrake is the best alternative because it is an Open Source fully functional software with absolutely everything I need to convert and watch my videos on Chromecast through VLC media player. It converted my video as fast as a blink of an eye with no issues. Had problems streaming an AVI file to my TV with VLC and Chromecast. Once I converted the video file to MP4 using HandBrake, however, everything went just fine!
