Their exists an authentic Vanilla EQ private server called "Project1999" you can look it up, it's been running for many years and with the blessing of Sony and the original EQ devs (meaning it won't be shut down). The only caveat is you need the EQ Titanium edition CDs to properly install the version of the game the server runs, and they legally aren't allowed to distribute the CDs. However, you only need the .exe files from those CDs and it isn't terribly hard to find someone willing to share their files with you (I can send you a link, just msg me).

Few games have the staying power that the original EQ had for me. There was something magical about the game when it first came out--so much to learn, explore, and master. But over time Sony ruined it by charging money for everything and turning the game into a profit engine for them. I later tried EQ2 for a while but it was even worse.
