Overall a great program. Considering the $100+ msrp, it should be.

I own like 3 copies of dtsearch that I bought in sealed retail boxes. Each came with an install CD, manual and a DTsearch pen.

**Disclosure: **I bought my new, "sealed", unused copies off ebay, for about $50 each.

I have used the software on & off for over 5 years.

Pros:

  • once indexing of drive is complete it is super fast to start typing in and word and a list pops up that contains those characters.
  • I believe regex is supported.
  • preview screen of any doc or text file is available, to see what's inside
  • company has provided updates free of charge, so far.
  • support has been very quick to provide help. Often does a secondary followup to see if you are doing ok, after any support request you send the company.

**Cons: **

  • first time through the indexing, depending on number/size of folders or drive, it can take several hours to completely index your selected data.
  • index file themselves can reach several GB in size. A secondary internal/external drive or a flash drive, used just for the indexed data collections, can help. A secondary drive prevents small capacity computer drives from becoming "filled up".
  • msrp a bit high, but if used in an enterprise/corporate environment, by a "Power Searcher", like a law firm or for eDiscovery, it's probably worth the cost.
Due to it's in depth feature set.

**Conclusion: **

  • Probably geared more toward business/corporate end users.
  • Good for small biz owners as well.
  • There is also a server version for business clients. Gives them access to indexed data sets residing on a company's server that is running the Server version of DTsearch..
  • I like the amount of indexed "Details" available, AFTER a completed indexing file/folder/drive scan.
  • I also like how after an index operation, in the search box, files/folders
"pop up as you type"; along with lessor/shorter matching ones ABOVE your keyword, plus longer matches appear BELOW your keyword.

EXAMPLE:

  • your keyword is **MEETINGS **and you search for it.
  • A sample of displayed choices for the end user running DTsearch,
    might look like this:

ME MEE MEET MEETI MEETIN MEETING [your searched for keyword] MEETING 2016 MEETING 2017 MEETING 2018 MEETINGS
