I think this is the best FTP-and-more browser ever, although I have not tried Transmission. But Cyberduck is free and open source, so I have no need to look for more. I love it.

I have no idea. It's really weird. I suppose they try to sell a couple of copies to not so educated users. But it's a big diffrence .. it would have been one thing if it was like €2-3 on the AppStore and then free on the website. But €16 .. hehe.

Would you prefer it be paid on their website? You pay in the store and get the "pro" version. A lot of developers are doing this - if you want the convenience of downloading the app from an app store (Apple, Microsoft), then you have to pay for the pro version.

From their website: "Cyberduck is free software, but it still costs money to write, support, and distribute it. As a contributor you receive a registration key that disables the donation prompt. Or buy Cyberduck from the Mac App Store or Windows Store. [...] The continued donations of users is what allows Cyberduck to be available for free today. If you find this program useful, please consider making a donation or buy the version from the Mac App Store or Windows Store."

You can buy it, but you get the exact same program. There is no pro version with more features. It's just a way to donate and receive automatic updates. You can even build it from source (available on GitHub), if you want to.
