I dont like this program because it usually removes things that should not be deleted and I have known a good many friends that it has screwed up their system, and they have to reformat their system, and start over. I dont recommend it, there are better cleaners out there.

What all does CCleaner Clean?

I'm having trouble with my computer right now.. I'm a college student and I go to the same 3-5 sites just about evey time I'm on the internet. I frequently have to save files for class, notes, research etc. My computer is running slow and according to AVG Anti-virus, I'm "not fully protected". I've been trying for the past hour to "fix" the problem through AVG and it's just not working. I'm not sure why. With all of that being said, Im wondering if I use CCleaner to clean out my computer if it'll delete or "clean" out documents, website memory, &/or files that I've downloaded that I need. Can anyone help?

It wont delete you documents, just your Web History and other unused system files. Accord to CCleaner " It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner." When you open ccleaner Run the "Analyze" button then clicker "Cleaner" to clean, afterward go to "Tools" and in the "Uninstall" bar, click the applications/programs that you dont use and uninstall them for more space.

Every one needs this software to clean up Windows! I use it with the standard Windows cleaning tool.

But if you do not know how and what to change in the registry, never use the automatic registry cleaner!
The registry is really important and delicate, even a small mistake and you can compromise the whole operating system stability!

So use Ccleaner to clean junk and temporary files, to manage start up apps, to remove browser plugins but DO NOT clean the Registry!

I don't know about the newest version, but it destroyed my registry few times in the past, the way my system couldn't start. I replaced it with RegCleaner and later with PowerTools Lite 2013, which were free but are both outdated by now.

Love this app, I just wish there were an option to scan an offline drive--a drive pulled from another machine.

Excellent. I use this to keep my backups smaller by cleaning out the garbage from time to time.

One of the first things I install on a newly installed Windows OS. Very straightforward, very fast, and very effective. Great program.

Comparison ........................................................ Pt. CCleaner ....... Pt. Glary Utilities
Disk Space .............................................................. 1 2.87 MB ............ 0 15.7 MB
Autostart Delay Function.......................................... 0 No .................... 1 Yes, is useful
Automatical cleaning, when the Computer starts .... 0 Selectable ........ 1 No, is safer
Cookies Delete Selectable for each browser .......... 0 No ..................... 1 Selectable, is safer
Analyze functions, what cookies to delete ............. 0 No, not so safe . 1 Selectable, what category
Detection of obsolete McAffee software in registry 1 Yes = OK .......... 0 No, not OK
Declared used as unused file extensions ................ 0 30 = Error ......... 1 5, really unused, OK
Could find numerous entries of uninstalled Nero.......1 with Active-X..... 0 Not detected
Assessment Points for all features ................ 3 Not my favorite . 5 My favorite
I had a bad experience after deleting entries, that CCleaner suggested to delete:
System was not bootable any more, so I had to restore Drive C from a Macrium Refl. backup.
With Glary Utilities until now I could follow all proposals without getting a problem. Otherwise, Glary Utilities was not able to find many left entries after uninstalling Nero, but CCleaner was here successful.
Be careful to follow CCleaner suggestions !</b

This comment really helped me out alot...what about with Auslogics BoostSpeed? Do you know anything about that cleaner? thanks jj

CCleaner only cleans the options that you have selected. There is also an "Analyse" mode that will show what would be deleted if you were running a "Clean" for real. If there is something that you do not want deleted, then you simply unselect that option (Just as you would with any of the other file cleaners).

CCleaner also allows for you to remove entirely from the program the ability to clean certain options - If you want to remove the option to delete any broken desktop shortcuts, then you can do that. If you want to define a new option to clean some settings and a few files from a program that you wrote - then you can do that also.

This is something that the other file cleaner programs can't do.

To claim that CCleaner "usually removes things that should not be deleted" - sounds like CCleaner has an intelligence of it's own and decides what should be deleted (and usually makes the wrong choice). Fortunately, in this case the choices of what should be cleaned or deleted are still 100% in the hands of the user.

If you don't want something deleted, unselect the checkbox for that item. CCleaner only does what it is told to.

I do not like CCleaner, because it usually removes things that should not be deleted.
I do not recommend it, there are better cleaners out there.
I prefer Glary Utilities: http://alternativeto.net/desktop/glary-utilities/
I used Glary Utilities to clean up the registry and to clean dead file-links or to clean temporary files.
In each case you should be careful before deleting, and look before, what will be deleted.

This is a great piece of software. Does an amazing job at getting rid of unnecessary files and superb for a computer tune-up.

@Aaron, I use this on a daily basis on several computers a day and never have had it mess up a computer. Perhaps there were other underlying issues with their computers?
