I love it! /e/ is based on Android (which is actually Open Source software) but stripped of its proprietary code and referrers to Google. There is no Google Play Services coming with /e/ and instead of the Google Play Store there's an alternative app store preinstalled: All Android apps I am using, are just working fine.
The whole thing actually just work as I am used from other Android versions.
/e/ is under active development and suggestions that I made to the developers are carefully listened to.
I am really happy with /e/ as it allows me to make sure that private data and addresses I store on my mobile device are not shared with advertisers. That's what I was looking for since many years.

As far as I know, /e/ is the most complete alternative to Google android because :

  1. it's based on Android so it's potentially compatible with all existing Android app
  2. it's been 2 years the developer team is working hard to remove all google data pumps from the code, replacing important features by alternative services like "internet check", DNS and other stuff in the core
  3. it's almost compatible with 100 mobile phones
  4. it's a complete open-source and privacy focused environment : all the default app are Open-source they have been designed to be able to sync with a cloud hosted by the organisation (5Gb free) or by yourself
  5. About the cloud, it's based on nextcloud
If your phone is not compatible and is about to die, you can buy an /e/phone directly on their website

On the good way to become a real alternative to Google Environment.
These are the default apps included in the OS:

  • Mail, calendar, task, note, contact, photo gallery > synching with a Nextcloud instance hosted by the organisation itself (or you can host yourself if you want) you can get an email and 5Gb storage for free
  • App Store, calculator, clock, weather, camera, sms, browser, music

All default apps, are privacy focused + opensource

It feels like Android, it works like Android but it is called /e/. Major difference with 'normal' Android: There are no Google services coming with it. But most applications still run as on 'normal' Android.

  • The system is fully based on open source software.
  • /e/ comes fully featured with an address book, calendar, email, browser, camera, a map and many others app.
  • For those who wish: /e/ provides an automatic backup of photos, addresses etc on a secure /e/ server. For those who do not like that, they may opt that all private data just remains on their phones.
  • /e/ comes with its own app store. Currently, around 50 000 apps are included. In case you are missing an app you may just ask that it will be included.
  • /e/ is actively developed by an international team. Regular security updates are guaranteed and the further development is no question either.
  • /e/ is currently available for almost 100 different phone models as download - including several older phones that do not receive security updates anymore from the manufacturer (from /e/ they do). Alternatively, you may opt to buy a phone with /e/ preinstalled. Just check their website: https://e.foundation
Personally, it is just the thing I was waiting for since a long time: A privacy focused, easy-to-use mobile phone operating system that is compatible to existing apps. I love it.

It's an ambitious project but it is still in beta. The unGoogling process is not completed yet!

/e/ does not send out private data to data mining companies. It is light-weight. It is actively developed

Love its UI and focus on privacy. The setup is smooth and with a single /e/ ID I can get my data backed up.
