Google Cloud outage disrupts Spotify, Discord, Snapchat, Replit, and more platforms
A Google Cloud Platform outage on Thursday caused widespread disruptions across major online platforms, beginning shortly after 11 AM Pacific Time. Services like Spotify, Discord, Snapchat, or AI services like Cursor, Replit, character.ai, and many more went offline, with outage reports confirmed by the Google Cloud Service Health site.
Cloudflare reported issues starting at 11:19 AM PT but clarified that only some of its services—those dependent on Google Cloud—were impacted. By 12:12 PM, Cloudflare began seeing signs of recovery, while its core infrastructure remained unaffected. Users were advised that some errors could persist temporarily as systems stabilized.
Spokespeople from both Google Cloud and Cloudflare confirmed the root cause was within Google Cloud. While Google has not provided a recovery timeline, outages of this kind are typically resolved within hours. Spotify acknowledged the disruption and is monitoring Google Cloud’s status. Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure reported no issues, indicating the problem was isolated to Google Cloud.
I mean, who does Google Cloud serve anyway? This, along with the last year's CrowdStrike mass blue-screens, show that proprietary lock-in is not the answer, and it will never be.
It's possible that they (along with GAFAM and the rest of the anti-Software Freedom proprietarists) are serving He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named (even Dr. RMS thinks so!)
Do you mean that Spotify could have chosen an open source alternative to Google Cloud that wouldn't have crashed? Which alternative would that be?
