Slant is a product recommendation community that helps connect people with the best products for them. You shouldn’t have to waste time and money to find solutions to your problems. By collecting the knowledge of enthusiasts across the world through recommendations, we can quickly and confidently show people the truth about a product.
Slant was built on, and is being built on, three core philosophies. The first of which is that there should be no market for lemons. You should be able to make the same decisions an expert would for any purchase, and Slant allows for that.
The second is that information should be organized around a problem, not a product. You don’t just need the best laptop, you need the best laptop for your needs. What are you really looking for? That’s what we want to help you find — the best products for you.
Finally, Slant believes in the power of the community. You use products, feel things about them, and see them in context of your life. Writers push out reviews before they can take in that context. Advertisements reframe feelings to create sales. But Slant users will only tell you what they know to be true. That’s what Slant is. At its core, Slant is a place where people control the marketplace. We dream of a world where products succeed or fail on their own merits, and allowing people the space to share their thoughts is the first step in achieving that.
Product Hunt is a website that lets users share and discover new products. The site, which was founded by Ryan Hoover in November 2013, is backed by Y Combinator. Users submit products which are listed in a linear format by day. The site includes a comments system and a voting system similar to Hacker News or Reddit. The products with the most votes rise to the top of each day's list.
Products are organized into four categories; technology products (web apps, mobile apps, hardware products, etc.), games (PC, web, mobile apps), books and podcasts. As of July 2014 submitting products to the site is available to all members. A submission simply requires a product title, URL, and tagline. As of 2016, according to Ryan Hoover, the website has led to the discovery of over 100 million products across 50,000 companies.
The site also includes a daily email list that sends out yesterday's top tech "hunts" (products) as well as a featured collection. A version of the digest is also available for games and books.
