Hello! My name is Ola and I'm a appaholic. My colleague Markus and I built this site because we always wanted to find good alternatives for all the applications that are out there. And please help us by suggesting more applications! Thanks for using the site!

hey Ola... how do I report spam?

Just FYI, I'm also writing this to Markus...

    Just a suggestion...

......if you REALLY want lots of alternative suggestions on your site, then I think maybe you need to make it easier and less involved (at least for those who don't want to go through the rigors of actually properly adding an app to the system). When someone suggests, now, they must go through said rigors of actually adding the app to the system...

...something I've done only once, with this app...

    Lingoes Translator
    http://bit.ly/GBm9NI

...on which, if you notice, I tried to do a really good and thorough job (which is the only way that I believe people should ever do things around here... or anywhere else, for that matter), but I have to say that so doing was a lot of work just so you could learn of an alternative to something.

So my suggestion is that you have two kinds of suggestion mechanisms, to wit:

One mechanism would be exactly what you now have, wherein the app could be officially and fully added to your site.

The other mechanism would be far faster and easier, wherein the suggester could simply tell you the name of the app, link you to its web site, and be done with it. Yes, I realize that that might create nothing but this long list of suggestions which someone would then have to circle back and add to your site in a truly PROPER manner, but it seems to me that volunteeers from those among your real fans and supporters who post a lot in your forums and whatnot could be encouraged to view said list and pick from it whatever they'd like to properly add to the system. You might even include the list of merely-suggested-but-not-actually-properly-added apps at the very bottom of the page of the app to which they're alternatives, along with a mention that they've been suggested, but not properly verified or added... or at least SOMETHING like that.

And on the very first page to which the user goes when s/he clicks on the suggest link, you could explain the two mechanisms (and how you'd prefer they use the proper add method), and let the suggester choose which one to use.

Some of us are just too busy to go through the proper "add" process; and I fear that that's why certain products do not have listed on their pages, here, anywhere NEAR the alternatives to them that are out there. If you want long lists of alternatives, then you need to make it EASY and FAST for people to tell you about them. Requiring that they go through the entire process of properly adding the app is just too much...

...or so, at least, it is my opinoin... my $.02 worth... which my ex-wife will happily tell you tends to be about ALL it's worth. [grin]

    Just tryin' to help!

Sorry to bother you, but this product...

    http://alternativeto.net/software/cx--cloud-experience-/

...does not actually have any Android compatibility. It has been promising it for so long, yet not delivering it, that I really don't think it deserves to trick/lure Android users into visiting its site only to learn that there's not really an Android app. It's misleading... hurts the consumer. It should not appear when one specifies a search for Android apps. Could you please change it?

    Thanks!

Hi Ola. I was just curious as to how many points someone has to accumulate in order to edit screenshots and icons for the applications. Thanks a lot!

Hi. Is anything wrong with the "Search apps..." box? There is no possible match list anymore. The same for the "Application Name" box when adding alternatives, so I can't add any software. I noticed it yesterday. Thanks

Uploaded first time shortly after joining, yesterday 2:44 PM ++ (That's when I got the mail saying I joined at least) As I joined using Facebook I thought it strange the picture wasn't already there and proceded to adding it..

Also strangely, I've whitelisted alternativeto.net, but still get that you can't display an ad..

I think addons may include programs that interact and help each other for a common goal ; and this can be a separate category, along with alternatives.

Hi, I visited the site recently and I noticed a lot of so-called applications that are not all applications but rather addons for other applications. I think we need a new category for them. (For example: Addons for Firefox) And this may solve the problem with:http://alternativeto.net/discussions/faq/119/should-applications-that-run-under-wine-have-linux-as-a-platform (Wine programs as addons for Wine ... same for Cygwin ... etc)

    Hi,

Please make your Flattr button dynamic instead of using a static icon for it. I've subscribed your flattr button, but still see it as unclicked every time I visit your page, which annoys me because it looks like the subscription has ended even though it hasn't.

    Thanks for a great site!

Hi Ola, I have a suggestion for AlternativeTo: there should be no limit to the number of screenshots you can submit per edit. Right now, you're only allowed to add a maximum of 3 screenshots every time you edit a page for an application. Which totally stinks. :P

For example, I was editing Google Translate the other day, and due to the 3-screenshot limit, I had to edit the exact same thing two times in a row. It would be a lot better if I didn't have to edit twice, every time I wanted to submit a couple of screenshots for an app.

    I Ola.

In an application page (e.g. http://alternativeto.net/software/facebook/) I don't see the links to Twitter page / Facebook page.
Also.. the link to website's application is not contextualized: it's too far from the application title. Many times, I want to open the app URL and have to move my eyes from top left to bottom right of the box.

One way to solve that is as this:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3022868/app%20hp%20prototype.PNG

Perhaps even the application title should be linked to its URL. That would only bring value as currently no link is there.

    What do you think?

Hi, I kinda like this project, it proves itself very useful so it comes natural to help back. Even though I am busy person I would like to contribute to this project as much as I could, but can not promise any huge chunk of my time. However I really like to discover new apps and aprooving (editing, etc...) here is a good place for doing so. So thanks for the offer, I gladly help. Have a chillaxed day, LeBaux.
