Hi! Me and Ola are the creators of AlternativeTo we hope you like the site. If you have any feedback then please drop us an e-mail at hello@alternativeto.net
Just FYI, I'm also writing this to Ola...
Just a suggestion...
......if you REALLY want lots of alternative suggestions on your site, then I think maybe you need to make it easier and less involved (at least for those who don't want to go through the rigors of actually properly adding an app to the system). When someone suggests, now, they must go through said rigors of actually adding the app to the system...
...something I've done only once, with this app...
Lingoes Translatorhttp://bit.ly/GBm9NI
...on which, if you notice, I tried to do a really good and thorough job (which is the only way that I believe people should ever do things around here... or anywhere else, for that matter), but I have to say that so doing was a lot of work just so you could learn of an alternative to something.
So my suggestion is that you have two kinds of suggestion mechanisms, to wit:
One mechanism would be exactly what you now have, wherein the app could be officially and fully added to your site.
The other mechanism would be far faster and easier, wherein the suggester could simply tell you the name of the app, link you to its web site, and be done with it. Yes, I realize that that might create nothing but this long list of suggestions which someone would then have to circle back and add to your site in a truly PROPER manner, but it seems to me that volunteeers from those among your real fans and supporters who post a lot in your forums and whatnot could be encouraged to view said list and pick from it whatever they'd like to properly add to the system. You might even include the list of merely-suggested-but-not-actually-properly-added apps at the very bottom of the page of the app to which they're alternatives, along with a mention that they've been suggested, but not properly verified or added... or at least SOMETHING like that.
And on the very first page to which the user goes when s/he clicks on the suggest link, you could explain the two mechanisms (and how you'd prefer they use the proper add method), and let the suggester choose which one to use.
Some of us are just too busy to go through the proper "add" process; and I fear that that's why certain products do not have listed on their pages, here, anywhere NEAR the alternatives to them that are out there. If you want long lists of alternatives, then you need to make it EASY and FAST for people to tell you about them. Requiring that they go through the entire process of properly adding the app is just too much...
...or so, at least, it is my opinoin... my $.02 worth... which my ex-wife will happily tell you tends to be about ALL it's worth. [grin]
Just tryin' to help!

This is certainly a site I wish I had created first myself :)
Man you guys act fast! I was expecting a day or two for approvals on the apps I submitted and found three of them approved before I finished the fourth AND myself approved as well.
Great web site and great administration, guys!
Just added the "Official" Twitter ID to XYplorer and had some comments:1) It wasn't (to me) clearly specified on Edit page as ID only is used vs http://twitter.com/XYplorer...it gave me a "no special chars" err when I tried URL so then gave just ID...suggest saying something like "Enter Twitter ID only"2) After setting ID, I went to XY page and selected Twitter tab...it didn't bring up those tweets but just the search results...maybe not working perfectly yet?
Also, re your msg system: When I got the last two(?) notifiers via email, there was NO actual "AT" msg text in it! I know an earlier one had text but recent ones did not. Just another lil issue to check on. Sorry! All it had was the following (plus links, at end, of course):Markus wrote you a message *** This is a friendly message from AlternativeTo. You can turn off these messages on your profile page.
Yes, I think having ability of adding screenshots via URL's may get more of them added, as users can then much more easily retrieve them from vendor/download sites via cut/paste from Properties, etc.
Thanks for handling the icon!
Is there a way to add a screenshot directly from a URL on web as I gave you? If not, why not? I didn't want to have to D/L here and then upload it to AT.n...
BTW, I didn't see you msg back to me for a nbr of hrs later...and it took quite a while for the app to show in my profile tab as Added...even though user activity showed it as such...humm...
Hi Markus!
I added AceHTML freeware as you may know, but I couldn't locate an icon for it on web and I don't have anything to extract icon from the EXE here so maybe you could locate one? Thanks! It's the HTML editor I've been using for quite a few years...not perfect maybe, but free is good!
Also, this could be added as screenshot: http://software.visicommedia.com/images/en/products/acehtmlfreeware/print_acehtmlw500.gif if possible
Thanks!
Hello Markus!Thank You for realizing "living links" in comments so quick. It is very useful. I have seen it just now, while looking the comment-site http://alternativeto.net/desktop/ultrasurf/comments . I have seen that UltraSurf is always in 1st position with most views and I was wondering, why.Because of these many views the malware warning is a very important new information.
Hi Markus!(A) Tank You for Correcting Bullzip PDF Printer. My attention was to put the now functioning icon to the Icon field, and then two Screenshots to the Screenshots Fields. The unwished result was: 1 or 2 icons in the area for the ScreenShots. I am not shure, if this is a bug (i think it happened already a few days ago), or if I have made something wrong.(B) I suggest a new feature: it would be fine to enable living links in comments instead of Link-Describing Text, as it is now. Auto Detection of links and enabling Link-Function as in GetSatisfaction would be optimal.
