VirtualBox

Open Source by Oracle (Sun Microsystems) | Link to website

VirtualBox is a powerful x86 & AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product. It allows you to run multiple operating systems on your computer, at the same time. VirtualBox can run a large number of guest operating systems, including (but not limited to) Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4 and 2.6), Solaris, OpenSolaris, and OpenBSD. Virtualbox may also run modified versions of Mac OSX, though the operating system is not officially supported. There are ... More info »

Needs more improvement

Comment by Eostyx about VirtualBox Feb 2012

Just as a performance gripe, it has this noticeable lag every second or so. I would only use this to test very basic things or to observe different operating systems. Otherwise, just install the OS on another petition. Experience it in it's glory, get drivers and stop the lag.

VirtualBox Oracle, if you can improve the performance limitations I would call this perfect for new users. Till then...

VirtualBox is great. Use it regularly to test software out so I do not have to worry about corrupting my primary desktop. Has saved me a couple times from bad installs / uninstalls.

VirtualBox portable isn't made by Oracle and isn't easy to use

@JonM33: I aggree with you: VirtualBox portable isn't made by Oracle. However, I and many other people are looking for a portable VM-app. Many persons report, that it is possible to work with "VirtualBox portable" on Vista business 64 bit, downloaded from http://www.vbox.me/ and/or http://portable-virtualbox.softonic.de/ . This VirtualBox portable is not very easy to use, but it is not far away to run as a VirtualBox portable. Maybe a new version can make the usage easier. So I would prefer to maintain the tags and metatag "portable" with an information: "Portable VBox isn't made by Oracle. The portable 64bit-Version seems to work only with a parallel original VirtualBox Desktop installation."

Amazing program that I have been using for years, since it was made by innotek GmbH. Sun Microsystems improved on it quite a bit and now it is owned by Oracle. Does everything I need for a virtual solution. It even supports 3D! I test Linux distros on a Windows 7 host and all Compiz functionality is there. You can even run them in Fullscreen Mode, so it looks exactly as it would if it were installed on your PC.

I love this app... I've been using it on my Macbook Pro and it runs windows 7 FLAWLESSLY. I also have an Ubuntu drupal quickstart distro running and so far I've encountered zero problems with any of the OS'es.

VirtualBox was kinda cool when it was owned by Sun. Now that Oracle has bought Sun they will probably let it die a slow death since there is no revenue in it for them... sad.
