Virtual Clonedrive

Free by SlySoft | Link to website

Virtual CloneDrive works and behaves just like a physical CD/DVD drive, however it exists only virtually. Image files of various formats (.iso, .bin, etc) can be mounted onto a virtual drive from your hard-disk or from a network drive and used in the same manner as inserting them into a normal CD/DVD drive. This program is absolute junk I don't know how anyone uses it. You can't even do anything. I installed this program, and then clicked on the icon where it has 3 tabs, and you have the first tab that says options like how many drives and auto mount last image and stuff like that, another tab for languages and another for info which tells you which version you have installed. After you click ok, thats it, NOTHING happens, it just closes the window and that is that. You can't do a damn thing. I also clicked on the image in the system tray. Also nothing there is two options, settings and help. and the clicking the settings gives you the same crap as clicking on the item on the desktop and it does the same thing you say ok and then it closes and then nothing happens, this program is absolute CRAP.

This man is confused. In the 'Settings" you can choose the NUMBER OF VIRTUAL DRIVES. If you set it to 'Disabled' then the tray icon will lead you back to settings, of course. But if you set it to 1 or more, then when you right-click the Tray Icon, it will say MOUNT followed by the option of the Virtual Drive Letter of your choice. Gordon must not have set the Drive number and left it disabled so there was no 'drive' to mount the .iso (whatever) to.

Also, for the safety of your computer, do not set it to the highest amount without first easing up to it. If you go from zero virtual drives to the highest number, your computer will crash, and you will have to restart it in safe mode, remove the drivers for each individual virtual drive, uninstall Virtual Clonedrive, and then restart your computer in normal mode, and then reinstall Virtual Clonedrive. It is a painful process to have to go through, so, do yourself a favor and don't overload your computer with the maximum amount of virtual drives, which you probably don't even need.

Despite author's strange preferences for application logos, this tool is great - lightweight, reliable and easy to use.

Best alternative to Daemon-Tools - free for commercial use (unlike Daemon-Tools)

This program mounts ISO files perfectly. Never had a problem.

I can get it to mount an MDF just fine, but I do see some info suggesting it'd have problems with compressed mdf images. I did have to select "all files" for it to let me choose the image file, and contrary to most other image mounters I did not select the .mds file but instead the mdf file directly (which is consistent with its behavior of bin/cue). I'm guessing though this only works for single-session disks, I do not have any images of multi-session disks to test with.

It doesn't support mdf/mds and lacks RMPS emulation. Otherwise, Virtual CloneDrive really works better than DaemonTools Lite (more user friendly, doesn't cause performance issues).

I'm guessing this has improved greatly since the last comments here, since I've never had a problem with it, and works much better than DT in my opinion
