According to http://www.useresponse.com/pricing , it is $199 for the cheapest package, although there is a limited free 15 day demo available.

The free plan is good but the price is INSANELY HIGH.
500 USD upfront for a software is way too much.

There is Online Demo, Free Plan, 30 days money back - if self-hosted is not for you, please use SaaS solutions, as we totally understand that it's preferably to pay on monthly basis, but stay with service for years and in total it won't save much.

Let me correct myself, if calculated on a monthly basis, it is 40 USD a month for a self hosted service.

The free version is very good for very simple idea suggestions only.

I wish there would be a far more affordable startup version.

You are right, except that you don't need to buy next year updates plan with 50% discount and stay with the version that was downloaded before 1st year after purchase expires, so it's basically less than 40/year as you won't pay if you are satisifed with the latest version installed before ends 1st year
