Trillian is a proprietary multiprotocol instant messaging application for Windows, Mac OS X, Android, iOS, BlackBerry OS, and the Web, created by Cerulean Studios. It can connect to multiple IM services, such as AIM, ICQ, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Bonjour, XMPP, and Skype networks; as well as social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace; and email services, such as POP3, IMAP, Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail.

Trillian connects to multiple instant messaging services without the need of running multiple clients. Users can create multiple connections to the same service, and can also group connections under separate identities to prevent confusion. All contacts are gathered under the same contact list. Contacts are not bound to their own IM service groups, and can be dragged and dropped freely. More Info »

Metacontact
To eliminate duplicates and simplify the structure of the contact list, users can bundle multiple contact entries for the same person into one entry in the contact list, using the Metacontact feature (similarly to Ayttm's fallback messaging feature). Subcontacts will appear under the metacontact as small icons aligned in a manner of a tree.

Activity history
Trillian Pro comes with Activity History, and both log the history as both plain text files and as XML files. Pro has a History Manager that shows the chat history and allows the user to add bookmarks for revision later on. XML-based history makes the log easy to manipulate, searchable and extendable for future functions.[2]

Stream manipulation
Trillian Pro also has a stream manipulation feature labelled 'time travel', which allows the user to record, and subsequently review, pause, rewind, and fast forward live video and audio sessions.[3]

Despite the ads, I still like it

Positive Comment by cdpinker about Trillian Also mentioning: Pidgin Jan 2012

The ads are intrusive and annoying. However, the app itself is decent and very versatile, supporting a wide range of services. It is fairly stable and I've used it happily for over a year now. I don't pay for the premium version and haven't missed any features I'd want. The UI is also good, minimalist and well designed, and I prefer that to Pidgin. Each to their own of course!

A few weeks ago, I returned to Trillian after many years away. During Trillian's absence from my computer, I initially ran nothing at all, and then tried out Digsby for a while. A long-time Trillian Basic user (before the existence of Trillian Astra), I switched back to Trillian due to having recently purchased an Android phone; Trillian's cloud history was the primary incentive.

Today, I finally got around to uninstalling it. Unfortunately, in the current form, the ads that Trillian displays are far too intrusive for me. The worst were the ones that popped-up as notification windows that needed to be clicked away (they don't disappear after a time period), but the ones inserted into the chat windows were annoying as well.

It's a shame, really - the rest of the program is superb, and if you're up for purchasing the ad-free pro version, don't hesitate to do so. However, with excellent free alternatives such as Digsby (watch out what you allow to be installed along with it, though) or Pigdin, I had very little patience for the intrusive ads shown by Trillian. If they ever change the way ads are shown, I'll be back; the conversation sync with the Android client is too good to pass up, but it didn't outweigh those darn ads.

I think all that stuff can be switched off in the options since i was able to turn it off before buying the pro version (i'm Talking about Trillian 5 not Astra or course).

I dunno... I thought I looked around pretty thoroughly.

just started using this. I haven't tried Pidgin or Digsby though, so I can't compare : but this is a very customizable and easy to use piece of software.
