    • Spideroak both syncs AND backs up your files. Dropbox is not a backup service. Most importantly, Spideroak encrypts files on your computer before uploading them to their servers, which means only you can see your files and no one else. Dropbox doesn't do this, which means that Dropbox employees could access your files, which a much less private solution. Guest • Nov 2016 Disagree   Agree
    • Dropbox is not a good SpiderOak alternative because: 1) It doesn't offer end-to-end encryption and the privacy advantages that offers (that's a big deal), 2) it's emphasis is on sync, SpiderOak offers sync and backup. Dropbox has been reported to be an NSA surveillance target; SpiderOak has no such concerns because of its encryption system. Parts of SO are open source. JohnFastmanDec 2016 Disagree   Agree

    • ownCloud is a PARTIAL SpiderOak alternative. Through oC's client you can backup and sync files. Typically, oC is run on your own server. This means only your hard disk limits the storage space, and your files belong to you. But oC doesn't encrypt your files in the "zero-knowledge" way, which SpiderOak does. SO costs money; oC doesn't unless you get a hosted version. Use oC with Cryptomator to maximize privacy/security. JohnFastmanDec 2016 Disagree   Agree

    • MEGA is similar to SpiderOak because it claims to encrypt your files locally before upload and not have the keys to decrypt them ("zero-knowledge"). However, since its inception, MEGA has been mired in various controversies and has had security flaws detected (since fixed). SO has enjoyed a solid reputation. Both MEGA and SO can become slow when dealing with large numbers of files (not necessarily large files). JohnFastmanDec 2016 Disagree   Agree

    Resilio Sync

    • Resilio sync is for syncing, not for backup; SpiderOak is for both. Also, SpiderOak encrypts files on your computer before they get uploaded, so it offers that much more privacy out of the box. Resilio Sync will sync files MUCH faster, but should not be relied on for backup because you need a computer running all the time to use it. Check out SyncThing as an open-source and more trustworthy alternative to Resilio Sync. JohnFastmanFeb 2017 Disagree   Agree

    • Tresorit is probably the best SO alternative, but it's also very expensive. Like SO, Tresorit is a company offering secure, end-to-end encrypted sync (which you can use as backup too). Files are encrypted on your computer and you hold the keys. Neither SO nor Tresorit can read your files. Tresorit is based in Switzerland, with stricter privacy laws. Both are Mac, Win and Linux friendly. JohnFastmanDec 2016 Disagree   Agree

    • pCloud are a Swiss (strong privacy laws) hosted sync service, similar to Dropbox. They are a partial SpiderOak alternative because they offer the option to have an encrypted folder to which only you have the password, and the contents of which only you can read. That is SpiderOak's whole way of working, so pCloud are a partial alternative. Uploads/Downloads are very fast though. Also Linux-friendly. JohnFastmanDec 2016 Disagree   Agree
